Lia Darjes

Plates I-XXXI

The enigmatic guests at Lia Darjes’ banquet seem straight out of a fairy tale. Plates I-XXXI is a silent series in vivid colours that unveils the magic of an unexpected reality.

Squirrels, tits, slugs, field mice, ants, sparrows: these are some of the small animals that become the protagonists of Lia Darjes’ mysterious tale. Far from frightening, they captivate and charm with their furtive spirit.

In a style reminiscent of the Dutch masters who inspire her, Lia Darjes captures the secret life of these timid creatures. Placing the leftovers of a meal in her or her friend’s garden, she entrusts the ensuing spectacle to her camera, which she leaves outside for hours or days at a time, its shots triggered by movement. This encounter between staged and chance creates a documentary study of these fellow beings with whom we live side by side, and yet so separately from.

Plates I-XXXI is a silent, colourful series that lifts the veil to reveal that unexpected visitors and magical parallel worlds are closer than we think.

Lia Darjes (born in 1984 in Berlin) lives and works in Hamburg and Berlin. She studied at HAW Hamburg in the class of Ute Mahler. Lia Darjes became known with Tempora Morte, a documentary still life study that almost iconically exaggerates its subject, small market stalls at unofficial street markets in Kaliningrad. Her first monograph was published with this work. In 2018, Lia Darjes began teaching photography at the Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie. She has been running the institution together with photographer Jörg Brüggemann since 2023. She has been represented by Galerie Robert Morat since 2019.

Taemin Ha

süü

An intimate glimpse into everyday life in Mongolia, captured through portraits of children and evolving landscapes that reflect the passage of the seasons.

Like a joyful window opened onto the rural life of Mongolian nomads, Taemin Ha’s photographs tell, above all, the story of an encounter. After spending several months with a family on the Mongolian plains, he captures the rhythms of their communal daily life. Portraits of children unfold through the seasons: sovereigns of these vast rural landscapes, they embody a profound sense of freedom, intimately connected to nature and the animals around them.

A peaceful softness radiates from his images, where the bright light of spring and summer follows the hushed, enveloping atmosphere of snowy winters. Light—ever-present in Taemin Ha’s work—seems to guide each scene: whether gently filtering through the window of a yurt or bathing children’s games in clear lakes, it accompanies every gesture, every gaze.

In dialogue with these photographs, poems by Erdenesolongo Batchuluun and Byambajav Gombojav—two Mongolian poets—are woven throughout the book. Their words intertwine with the images to form a new thread of connection and resonance, offering a poetic lens that deepens the sense of presence, memory, and shared time.

Taemin Ha (born in 1995 in Gunsan) is a South Korean photographer based in Seoul. His practice focuses on the nuanced portrayal of individuals and communities he has engaged with, capturing the multifaceted nature of his subjects and their intimate moments. His work has been featured in various publications and media.
