Abortion is prohibited in the Dominican Republic. Yet women find ways to access it. Doble Moral gives a voice to those who take control of their bodies.
In a country where abortion is illegal, women must find ways to navigate the restrictions and state control. Karla Hiraldo Voleau met some of these women and handed them the shutter release of her camera. By creating, together, a setting in which they could make their own portraits, the photographer gives them the opportunity to take ownership of their image, just as they should be able to do with their bodies.
In Doble Moral, intimate testimonies and (self-)portraits intertwine with stories that are both deeply personal and universal: those of women who act in secret, revealing another reality of contemporary Dominican Republic.
Karla Hiraldo Voleau, born 1992, is a French-Dominican artist.
